I would like to take the time to write an article about biblical business habits.
It seems as though the world of the internet is filled with inspiration. One thing that inspires many entrepreneurs is their faith. I believe there is a lot to be said for faith-based business habits. A lot of times, this is done behind the scenes without mention of ones faith when a post is made. I am grateful to have the opportunity on this post to do so.
The first thing I do when I get up in the morning before I go to work of any sort, is to pray, then as I'm praying, I am fasting not eating till it is time to get up. Then I go turn to some scripture, some form of devotion to the Word of God, that I may have spiritual food for the day. Then the next step is to turn to worshipping (singing/worship music).
Those are my four main habits everyday. Sometimes they take longer as I'm seeking Him and spending time with God. See most entrepreneurs know that everything is not about money, or about the business or the owner of it. Everything that is needed for business as well as for personal sustaining is found in God. When we put Him first, that is when our world opens up around us. We stay narrow-minded without Him.
It is good to pray. It is also great to study Scripture. There is so much to finding God when you do these things. He shows us more than we can imagine most times. That is what is referred to as meditation. To stop and ponder things of God, is when we feed on God's goodness. He teaches us things about Himself, the world and ourselves. Often we find out that we need to get more organized as we find things standing in the way of our relationship with Him. It is a purification process He takes us through. It is good for the soul in this way to clean house as we speak. I love the adage cleanliness is next to Godliness. Clean bodies, clean faces, clean clothes, clean hair, clean houses, clean lives. However, we are never perfect, but always achieving perfection. That is why humbleness is so important, because no one is perfect.
In the realm of business the habits that we conduct before we start our day set the tone for our business lives. We seek to head to work on time regularly, follow protocols, take our lunch at a set time, behave professionally and to fulfill the tasks given by our bosses obediently. When we punch out on the time clock, we head home with the satisfaction of a job well done for the day and look to the reward of returning home peacefully. On the weekends we seek that Friday is the end of the week and head home for the weekend with an attitude of rest. On Sunday we seek to get a good night's sleep that we may start the following week off well as the previous week.
As a worker is worth his wages, we look forward to vacations and holiday pay and sick time as needed. We feel entitlement in a sense, but we also feel it is earned as we put in our labor. We look forward to a kind boss who will make sure our check is accurate and not withholding wages from us. We are motivated by being treated fairly as individuals and not treated as slaves as the laws have provided so that we may not be overworked for wages of pay. We feel eager to practice our skills and talents in an environment where we will not be overly penalized or micromanaged. We desire stability every moment as we have expectations of dedication of some time to a good company that may perhaps become the parent of our careers and donate upwards of 5-10 or more years of sweat.
We also know that we have to opportunity to witness in our employment being a testimony to those working around us that we not only are being watched, but that we in our natural habitat are serious about our work wanting to please our boss, but also to perform our best, and achieve our greatest promotions. We have a desire to improve our resumes and obtain references that we may shine amongst our competitors and become that success story of the American dream that our faith was founded from. We look to set ourselves up for future endeavors for a long career that may lead to the ultimate goal of retirement, which is the epitome of success upon, which hard work was the mantra.
Nevertheless, what we learned growing up, and in church and from our parents, our peers, our teachers, leaders, community, friends and family, and not least from faith we seek to carry on these traditions while ever focusing on edifying ourselves into better business people that may perhaps achieve the unthinkable.
